An interesting turn of phrase, a warm affirmation of what we already know, a surprising insight that lifts our spirits—these are reasons why we love quotes.
Whether you want to dive into new vacation plans or just dream about far-flung destinations in a cozy arm-traveler way, here are some of my favorite on-the-go sayings coupled with places that have recently touched my heart.
1. LIFT YOUR ANCHOR
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” — Mark Twain
Photo above: In Dutch St. Maarten, join a team to race former America’s Cup yachts against each other in the 12-Metre Challenge, a regatta that happens four times every day from Bobby’s Marina in Philipsburg. Or just laze onboard as other shipmates hoist sails. The azure Caribbean Sea, the sweet breeze… Ahoy, mateys!
2. OPEN YOUR EYES
“We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.” — Jawaharial Nehru
Photo above: Playful cockatoos can become your fine-feathered friends! These two curious birds frolic in a grove of palm trees at UNEXSO, which runs the fun Dolphin Experience in the Port Lucaya Marina of Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Anyone say “staring contest”?!
3. BRIGHTEN YOUR OUTLOOK
“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.” — Terry Pratchett
Photo above: Relaxing Providenciales in the Caribbean’s Turks & Caicos Islands is easy on your eyes and soul. There are no stoplights, no chain restaurants here. Lots of laid-back, wind-swept scenery abounds. Its two Ocean Club Resorts, set almost a mile apart on immaculate 12-mile-long Grace Bay Beach, serve up gracious hospitality under umbrellas that are pretty in pink. The multi-bedroom suites, with full kitchens, are especially comfy for family vacays and girlfriend getaways.
4. ROLL WITH THE FLOW
“Stop worrying about the potholes in the road and celebrate the journey.” — Fitzhugh Mullan
Photo above: Florida‘s Amelia Island, off the Atlantic coast near Jacksonville, is distinguished for its grand oak trees, which are draped in dramatic Spanish moss. Here, they canopy over a road in Fort Clinch State Park, a tranquil zone for eco-minded adventurers. Steer straight for a personable bike tour via Kayak Amelia, run by Jody (“boss lady”) and Ray (“barefoot tree-hugger”) Hetchka.
5. APPRECIATE OTHER CULTURES
“Try new things, meet new people, and look beyond what’s right in front of you. Those are the things to understanding this amazing world we live in.” — Andrew Zimmern
Photo above: Sip mint tea for two (or ten) in Tunisia‘s picturesque fishing-and-artist village of Sidi Bou Said, near Tunis and Carthage. Perched on a hillside, Sidi Bou Said charms with its white-washed buildings, blue doorways, and black cats that overlook a dazzling seascape.
6. MOVE MERRILY FORWARD
“If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.” — Anthony Bourdain
Photo above: Near Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) in Paris, ride a double-decker carousel—replete with whimsical horses, planes, and cars! The merry-go-round creates magical memories for those who alight, especially adults who spin with grins and share bisous (kisses)!
7. POINT TO POSSIBILITIES
“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” — Susan Sontag
Photo above: At Hawks Cay Resort in Duck Key, midway down the necklace of islands that make up the Florida Keys, you can scuba dive, kiteboard, parasail, and swim with bottlenose beauties at the Dolphin Connection. Splash happiness!
8. EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
“The greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time…” — Bill Bryson
Photo above: You might, at first glance, think the land is covered with fresh fallen snow. But this is New Mexico, in the mountain-ringed, desert-dry Tularosa Basin, about 15 miles southwest of Alamogordo. Then your mind makes the necessary “aha!” leap to understand that these 245 square miles of gorgeous gargantuan dunes, some so high that you will want to slide down them on sleds like a giddy child, are composed of an otherworldly bounty of gypsum crystals. White Sands National Monument is a geological wonder unlike any other.
9. DISCOVER A NEW MAP
“Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.” — Dalai Lama
Way over yonder in Western Nebraska, along the legendary Oregon Trail near Mitchell Pass, Scotts Bluff National Monument showcases colorful stories about and amazing artifacts from the thousands of pioneers, trappers, and traders who swung westward in the mid-1800s across a landscape that is still spectacular, sublime, surreal, and stark — sometimes all at the same time!
