Most weekdays, I spend between 8 and 10 hours in front of a computer. I work as a freelance writer, and when I’m on deadline, the only things moving are my fingers.
I needed to make some changes; I won the Live Well Stay Well Challenge through Summit Medical Group, and received a fitness evaluation from a physical therapist, a nutrition evaluation from a registered dietitian, and a meeting with a behavioral health counselor to talk about goal setting and staying motivated.
Over the course of the next three months, I will be meeting with the team and the other challenge winners. I also got a Fitbit Flex, which retails for $99.95. In case you are unfamiliar with the Fitbit, it is a lightweight wristband that tracks the number of steps and the distance you travel each day. It also calculates how many calories you’ve consumed and how many you’ve burned. It’s a pretty nifty device, and wearing my Fitbit motivates me to keep moving.
Since I’ve been wearing my Fitbit Flex, I’ve clocked 10,000 steps each day. That’s my goal. My cats are helping me too. While I’m writing, my cats jump up on my desk and knock over a few papers if I don’t go downstairs for lunch. Most of us don’t think of exercising with our feline friends, and too many people give their dogs quick walks that last just a few minutes. Cats and dogs need exercise. In fact, more than 55 percent of cats and dogs in the U.S. are overweight.
