Writer Frank Lalli sorts through some common Obamacare confusion.
Q: The month is almost over—Is it too late to enroll?
A: No. You have until March 31, 2014, to sign up for insurance under the Affordable Care Act, according to the nonprofit organization Families USA—but for coverage starting Jan. 1, enroll by mid-December. Regardless of when you sign up, benefits run through the end of 2014. Go to HealthCare.gov or call 800-318-2596 to connect with your state’s public exchange, where you can shop for insurance and find out whether you qualify for subsidies or even Medicaid. Remember, nearly everyone must get health insurance next year or face a fine of $95 or 1 percent of their income—whichever is greater. But if you already have a decent plan, say, through work, you don’t need to buy more insurance.
