Just last week we were celebrating the 10 most romantic cities in the United States. This week? Not so much. The newest top 10 ranking of American cities lists just the opposite: the top 10 cities for heartbreak.
This study looked at data for the length of marriage by state (Washington, D.C. came in with the shortest marriages: 12.4 years), the number of dating services–perfect for finding a rebound relationship–according to Economic Census information, and the Gallup Healthways Well-Being Index. The last statistic analyzed was the rate of venereal disease per 100,000 people.
Heartbreak is most prevalent in Chicago. Even though the average failed marriage lasted 21.3 years, the Windy City boasts 16 dating services, a well-being index rank of 87, and 150.5 cases of venereal disease per 100,000 people. Miami and New York rounded out the top three.
Interestingly enough, there was some minor overlap between the most romantic list and the list of heartbreak capitals. The two lists were generated by different groups looking at completely different sets of data, but Miami ended up on both. The Floridian metropolis ranks second for heartbreak and is the fourth romantic city.
