Q: When were sunglasses invented?—Janet E., Rochester, N.Y.
A: Sunglasses date back to circa 12th-century China, when judges wore dark quartz lenses to hide their emotions in court. They didn’t take off in America, however, until 1929, when plastics developer Sam Foster sold the first pairs of mass-produced shades in Atlantic City.
